Jorge Garcia is an American actor and a stand up comedian known for his portrayal of Hugo “Hurley” Reyes in the television series Lost from 2004 to 2010.
He was also known for his roles in How I Met Your Mother, Alcatraz, Californication, and Hawaii Five-0. Jorge Garcia is not only praised for his acting skills but also because of his great weight loss transformation.
He was the most lovable person on the Lost. He even said in Conan’s interview that kids and their moms used to love him and even referred himself as someone everyone would like to cuddle.
In the same interview he said that he used to get green tea and other diet products gifted to him by his fans.
Jorge followed a specialised diet and exercise routine customized specially for him and shredded some pounds of his weight for his career and health.
Losing weight was great for his mental and physical health and it got rid of his stress and anxiety.
Jorge followed a combination of Nooch, Keto, and General Motors (GM) diet. Customized exercise plan was however a tough task for him.
It mostly included cycling. Jorge even said that he didn’t like to cycle but later on he became fond of it and would do it for even an hour.
Things did seemed tougher at first but one needs a strong mindset and determination to make something like this happen.
Reason behind Jorge’s weight gain
According to Jorge he has an eating disorder which drives him towards munching the food at all times. According to him this disorder is the reason behind his weight gain. His 6 feet 1 inch height was the reason that he was able to accumulate these extra pounds.
But the extra became too much when he hit around 400 pounds. His extra weight never became a problem in his career until the team of Lost asked him to lose some weight so he could continue with the show, due to the theme of the show.
He was to be shown to survive on a deserted island and hence lose weight due to unavailability of food on the island.
Jorge’s Motivation for Weight Loss
When the team of Lost asked him to lose the weight, he had no bigger projects left with him apart from Lost. So, to keep his career alive he was left with no other choice.
According to doctors if he would do nothing about his extra weight then he might develop Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and sudden heart attack.
One of his friends said at that time, “No one wants to see that happen to him. Jorge is one of the nicest, gentlest souls you would ever want to meet, but he just can’t keep the pounds off”. When the team of Lost asked him to lose the weight, it most certainly was a wakeup call for him.
How Jorge Garcia lost his Weight
The question was simple, but the process was tough. Jorge was given an option of surgery by his doctors, but due to the risks involved he and his family members decided to not go for it.
So he had to go for traditional ways of losing weight that is by diet and exercise. Garcia with a team of an expert dietician and workout trainers started for the same.
Jorge Garcia’s Weight Loss Diet Plan
Suddenly changing eating habits can be a challenging task for any person and may lead to mood swings and anxiety. And for someone with eating disorder like Jorge it was more difficult. Dieticians recommended Nooch diet plan to Jorge.
His unhealthy food intake was replaced with a healthier one. He was asked to get rid of all the oily and processed foods which used to be a major part of his diet and replace them with raw and uncooked vegetables and fruits.
In an interview Jorge said that he followed a Keto diet along with Nooch diet. In Keto diet the amount of protein intake is increased along with all the major vitamins and minerals.
The key is that the carbohydrate in the diet is decreased.
Carbohydrate provides the source of energy in the body, so when this carbohydrate deficit diet is followed and the amount of fat intake is not reduced then whenever the person does the exercise and the body fails to take the energy from the carbohydrate required for the exercise, then it looks for an alternative.
Here the alternate option available with the body is fat. So the fat is used by the body and hence the body fat percentage drops from the body.
In other words we can say that the fat is used to cut the fat from the body.
Keto diet also helps in controlling the blood sugar level and reduces the risk of diabetes.
Jorge was asked to avoid potato, sweet potato, any kind of meat such as beef, turkey, pork only lean meat like chicken or fish is okay, lard oil, safflower oil, butter, margarine, white rice, bread, processed foods, full fat milk, full-fat yogurt, frozen yogurt, ice cream, cheese, alcohol, soda, sweetened drinks, and packaged fruit juices. Let’s have a look at the Jorge’s diet plan for the 7 days of the week.
Day 1 – Eat as much as fruits as you can in the day. Fruits are the great source of fibre which helps in digestion and burning the fat.
Consumption of certain fruits promotes weight gain; hence you must recognize them and stay away from those.
Melons are said to help in weight lose and they are a great source of water, so they can be consumed in this day.
Day 2 – In second day, Jorge was asked to eat only uncooked or boiled vegetables. If potato has to be taken then it strictly has to be taken in the morning.
Day 3 – Fruits and uncooked vegetables can be eaten with no restrictions. Since it is supposed to be the blend of diet from the first two days therefore you will find it easier.
Day 4 – This is probably the weirdest day of the week. 8 bananas and 4 glasses of milk can be consumed throughout the day. The milk must be skimmed or toned; avoid taking full fat milk.
Day 5 – In fifth day are allowed to eat 6 large tomatoes, and fish or chicken breast, or brown rice for vegetarians and vegans.
The tomatoes are good source of lycopene and the fibre in it would promote healthy digestion as well. From this day you need to increase your water intake with four glasses for better metabolism.
Day 6 – Lean meat can be consumed like chicken or fish, or a cup of brown rice with either raw or cooked vegetables for vegetarians and vegans.
Avoid taking tomatoes on this day. On this day you can see obvious improvements in your skin.
Day 7 – A cup of brown rice and vegetables can be consumed on this day. And in addition fruit juices can be consumed but make sure that they must not contain any sugar in them.
This seven day diet plan is also known as General Motors (GM) diet. This diet helps in shredding that extra weight fast.
Since, Jorge was also an alcoholic so it was difficult for him to give away alcohol as well, but he did that too. He drank 8 to 10 glasses of water daily and worked out daily to accompany this clean and healthy diet.
Jorge Garcia’s Weight Loss Workout Routine
Jorge used to workout daily with the diet, no excuses whatsoever. Let’s have a look at the exercise Jorge used to do daily.

- Wrist rotation (clockwise and anticlockwise)

- Neck rotation (clockwise and anticlockwise)

- Breathing exercises
- Face exercises
For a person with same body type as Jorge, you can follow his diet and workout plan. But before that you must consult your dietician.
Precautions when following diet like Jorge
Jorge Garcia didn’t make an ideal body after following the new routine. He however was able to lose some pounds.
But results don’t seem to come overnight so stop overstretching your body and be too harsh on yourself and also don’t deplete yourself in order to follow strict diet routine.
Eat only a lower amount of food at a time and increase its frequency. Pace yourself slowly and don’t rush in order to get quick results.
We can take inspiration from the 46 year old actor with an eating disorder who reduced his weight at the right moment for his career and health. However, after losing 30 pounds, it was advised that he sticks to the same healthy eating plan and exercise routine but he didn’t and has again started to gain weight.
But after changing his eating habits and exercising daily, he did a turnaround with his life and started becoming more and more happy. It was around that time he found the love of his life Rebecca Birdsall. He introduced his lover in an event in 2017. He married Rebecca in June 22, 2019 at Leixlip Manor outside Dublin, Ireland.
Jorge has still problems controlling his weight and has tried various methods to control his weight. Now, Jorge has adopted veganism to help him control his weight.
Jorge is now an inspiration for people with eating disorders and for all those who try it hard to control their weight.
