Hibiscus Powder - Benefits, Side Effects and How to Apply

Hibiscus is a type of flowering plant, also known as rose mallow, hardy hibiscus, rose of sharon, and tropical hibiscus. Hibiscus has great importance in Hindu culture.

The red hibiscus is known as the flower of the Kali maa, and appears frequently in depictions of her in the art of Bengal, often with the goddess and the flower merging in form.

The hibiscus is used as an offering to goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha in Hindu worship. Apart from that hibiscus has been used since ancient ayurveda for centuries now.

It is found in various colours including red, purple, yellow, pink and white and it grows primarily in south-east Asia.

In ayurveda it is also known as Japa Pushpa. Hibiscus flower has a lot of medicinal properties. For using hibiscus flower you can directly get hibiscus powder from any shop and use it.

You can also make hibiscus powder at home using a hibiscus flower.

How to make Hibiscus Powder at home

  1. Take 20-30 freshly plucked hibiscus flower and take out any remaining leaves out of it.
  2. Wash these flowers in water to make sure that there are no insects and pollen grains present in them.
  3. Take the flowers out of water and let them dry inside the house, you can also use cotton to remove any excess water present on flowers.
  4. Once the flowers have been dried of the water place them in a bowl and cover the bowl with a thin cotton cloth and use rubber band to tighten the cloth around the bowl. The purpose of the cloth is to keep the flowers dust free.
  5. Place the bowl in sunlight for 10-15 days and at the night time bring it in.
  6. After keeping the bowl in sunlight for 10-15 days, check the flowers for paper type texture and sound while you hold them.
  7. If flowers aren’t having paper type texture then place them again in sunlight for few more days.
  8. Once you get the papery texture take the flowers in a grinder and grind them till you get a solid powder.
  9. Place the powder in an air tight container.
