Most hemorrhoid are actually constipation led hemorrhoid which go away automatically after a period of time as constipation gets cured. But there are many cases where the situation gets worse due to enlargement of hemorrhoid flare ups, intense regular bleeding, and intense itching problem. People affected by grade 3 and grade 4 hemorrhoids need immediate medical treatment.
As you know, there are two types of hemorrhoid; internal (inside rectum) and external (outside rectum) so treatment varies for both of these hemorrhoid types. Further, one must realize the perfect time to seek medical treatment.
When to seek medical treatment for hemorrhoids?
Well, it is always beneficial to get diagnosed and treated as earlier as possible. We would suggest you see a doctor whenever you”ll notice any symptoms like itching, burning sensation, bleeding or even chronic constipation. If you have any of these symptoms, then go see a doctor asap.
Because prevention is better than cure.
However, if you are having a serious problem like regular bleeding, sitting problem, painful bleeding, the sensation of an enlarged flare-up or intense itching problem then possibly you are suffering from grade 3 or grade 4 piles and medical treatment becomes your need then. In this post, we’ve discussed various hemorrhoid treatment methods which you must be acknowledged with.
We have discussed both surgical and nonsurgical hemorrhoid treatment. Surgical are more painful since the treatment process takes place in the upper anal area where more veins are present which detect the pain instantly.
1. Topical Treatment – Over The Counter Treatment
Topical treatment includes the use of suppositories, ointment and creams on the swollen hemorrhoid since you will be applying creams on the visible outer part of anus so this treatment is suitable for external hemorrhoid only.
You can easily get an ointment for piles or hemorrhoid at your nearest medical store without any prescription and pharmacists would also guide you about the usage procedures.
Piles Creams and ointment should be applied maximum up to one week only because its prolonged use can affect the skin adversely. Moreover, you must not use more than one ointment.
Some pharmacists may advise you to use an extra supplement along with topical creams like phenylephrine which is useful in stopping bleeding piles.
If you’ve only itching and burning sensation problem then you can ask for any soothing creams also, like hydrocortisone witch hazel cream or Aloe Vera Gel etc.
Hemorrhoid Creams like hydrocortisone should be applied twice a day, up to a period of two weeks (maximum) only.
Painkiller could be a life-saving medicine for painful bleeding piles or any type of pain in the anal area. Painkillers like paracetamol are easily available at any medical store without any prescription and these are the best short reliever for painful hemorrhoids.
You should avoid medicines like iBuprofen which are actually not- steroids anti-inflammatory drug and also avoid painkillers like cosine that causes constipation.
Laxatives are the medicines that help in emptying bowels and thus alleviates charges of constipation. So if you’ve constipation led piles then ask your doctor or pharmacist for any good laxatives. You must enquire about the side effects like bloating, flatulence and abdominal pain, which has been seen on the excessive use of laxatives.
4. Rubber Banding
Almost surgical treatment of hemorrhoids in the upper anal area i.e. a kind of internal hemorrhoid treatment. In this method, a rubber band is placed at the base of hemorrhoid that cut off blood circulation in the extend region. Due to lack of blood supply, the hemorrhoid gets dry and eventually gets eliminated while defecation.
Rubber banding treatment takes one day or two, based on severity and problem of the patient and is an anesthesia-free procedure.
A Little bleeding and ulcer formation at the site of banding are usually common, which goes away on its own. It usually takes a week to get that dried hemorrhoid to get discharged and you may or may not notice it.
Rubber banding treatment is suitable for patients taking anticoagulant medication.
So rubber banding is believed to be one of the best internal hemorrhoids treatment with long-term effectiveness. Further, the best part is it is a painless treatment, unlike other surgical methods.
The injection treatment for hemorrhoid is a good alternative to rubber banding ligation.
A needle containing some chemical solution like phenol and vegetable oil, phenol and quinine or urea hydrochloride solution) is injected at the base of hemorrhoid, these chemical solution affects blood vessels directly, causing them to shrink.
This also hardens the hemorrhoidal tissue and gradually it’s size reduces to a great extent. Shrinking of veins at hemorrhoids base relieves pain too.
During the treatment, strenuous exercises should be avoided otherwise serious complications may arise. Bleeding may occur on some day and may remain for a couple of days.
Another effective piles treatment which is non-surgical in nature.
Electrotherapy is also known as electoral coagulation, a suitable treatment for smaller hemorrhoid of grade I and grade II only.
First, an instrument called proctoscope is inserted into the anus to locate the base of hemorrhoid.
Then an electric current is passed through a metal probe to the hemorrhoid base. The blood supplying hemorrhoid gets coagulated which eventually shrinks it. Mild pain and little rectal bleeding are common short-lived side effects of electrocoagulation treatment.
Again here in this treatment, the main objective is to coagulate the veins near the hemorrhoid base which will eventually shrink it. Like other treatment here a probe is placed at the base of hemorrhoids, this treatment is used very often due to its low success rates.
Cryotherapy otherwise known as a freezing treatment for hemorrhoid is suitable for internal hemorrhoid only. In this method, a probe that is capable of applying cold temperature is placed at the hemorrhoidal base that destroys the tissue. There are very high chances of hemorrhoid recurrence in the future so it is used very often.
9. Hemorrhoids Surgery Treatment
Surgery is the best treatment for all types of external hemorrhoid with better success rates than the above mentioned non-surgical methods.
The success rate in a sense that hemorrhoid is less likely to reoccur as compared to nonsurgical treatment.
The biggest drawback is that the treatment procedure is not easy as it involves the use of scissors, scalpels stitching, etc. which causes more pain during or after the surgery. And the pain and uneasinesses remain for more than two weeks. And those two weeks becomes the toughest time to spend. Surgery is suitable for lower anal hemorrhoid and is done only if other treatment methods did not work out.
There are different types of Hemorrhoid surgery which we have considered as a form of hemorrhoid treatment as well, like these following:
11. Hemorrhoidal artery ligation
12. Hemorrhoid Stapling
We have discussed hemorrhoids and piles surgery and the types of hemorrhoid surgeries in detail in another post.
So these are some popularly known Hemorrhoid medical treatments.
